NuMark Credit Union Offers Job Shadowing Opportunity to Polished Pebbles

May 2022 – In supporting Rotary District 6450 and International Rotary President Shekhar Mehta’s Empowering Girls Initiative to improve the health, education, well-being, and security of girls across the globe, NuMark Credit Union connected with Polished Pebbles to deliver a financial services job shadowing workshop.

Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program is a Chicago-based mentoring initiative that creates communication competencies to help increase the employability of young African American and Latinx women in the future workplace. The Polished Pebbles job shadow experience provides girls with the opportunity to learn about new careers by visiting local companies and learning from industry leaders and professional mentors.

A group of 17 girls from Holmes Elementary School traveled to the NuMark Tinley Park branch to learn about the inner workings of a credit union and what different job opportunities there at a financial institution. During that day, NuMark staff stopped by to share with the girls what their jobs are like and what their day-to-day responsibilities are. They heard from NuMark’s Chief of Information, the Tinley Park Branch Manager, a Tinley Park Financial Service Representative, the Marketing Specialist, the Training Manager, and the Teller Supervisor at the branch. They were given a tour of the branch and even got to go behind the scenes and see behind the teller line.

“They were a great group, very attentive,” said NuMark Credit Union Training Manager, Mack Story. “You could really tell that they wanted to learn, and they asked great questions. I think their favorite part was when we took them behind the teller line to see the vault. They loved seeing that part and had lots of questions for our Teller Supervisor.”

“The ladies at Holmes Elementary thoroughly enjoyed their experience visiting NuMark Credit Union for a job shadow,” said Polished Pebbles’ Facilitator Nia Lackland. “They left feeling very excited to start their own savings accounts and their journey to financial freedom through a credit union. Polished Pebbles is happy to partner with NuMark Credit Union to provide opportunities for girls to learn about financial wellness when they are young and start planning for their futures today.”

Since 2009, Polished Pebbles has worked with over 7,000 girls in elementary school through college in Chicago, the Southwest suburbs, Indiana, Texas, and North Carolina, helping girls become effective communicators at home, school, and the future workplace.
