Shred Days 2026

On Friday, May 22, volunteers from NuMark Credit Union (NuMark) joined members of the community to place American flags at veteran gravesites in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (ALNC) as part of the Flags In Day ceremony. This was the credit union’s fourth time participating in Flags In Day.
This annual event is held every year on the Friday before Memorial Day in preparation for the holiday. It originally started at the Arlington National Cemetery in 1948, when the 3rd Infantry Regiment (also referred to as The Old Guard) placed American flags at gravesites to honor those buried there. It was a small gesture to those who served our country, and the tradition spread to other national cemeteries throughout the country. NuMark would also like to thank 1340 WJOL for providing live coverage of the event again this year.
“This means so much to me,” said Laurie Veasy, Vice President of Lending at NuMark, in an interview with WJOL the morning of the ceremony. “I have two uncles who are buried here, one of which used to live with me, and he served in the Marines and the Navy. It’s so emotional, and I’ve been here for the actual Memorial Day ceremony, as well. If you ever get the chance to do Flags In [Day], it’s something that I recommend to everyone.”
NuMark’s staff is always eager to volunteer for local events like Flags In Day to as a thank you to the communities and members that support the credit union. The credit union movement’s philosophy of “people helping people,” is a cornerstone of NuMark’s culture. With several veterans both on NuMark’s staff and volunteer Board of Directors, the credit union puts an emphasis on honoring those who serve our country. NuMark also raises money annually for Wreaths Across America, Honor Flight Chicago and Honor Flight of the Quad Cities for Lee County, in addition to their yearly participation in Flags In Day.
“The Flags-In Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery this Memorial Day truly left a lasting impression on me,” said Sangell Mullins, Card Services Specialist at NuMark and first-time Flags In Day attendee. “What stood out the most was the quiet, shared sense of honor among everyone there. There weren’t many words spoken, except those who chose to speak the names of the fallen, and you could feel the meaning in every step, every flag placed, and every moment of reflection. It was both emotional and humbling.”
NuMark’s mission is to enrich financial lives, and employees strive every day to provide members of the credit union and surrounding communities with the resources needed for them to achieve their financial goals. From community events like Flags In Day to free seminars and financial wellness workshops and everything in between, NuMark’s staff takes any opportunity to help others. They’ve been proudly serving the surrounding communities for over 70 years, providing top-tier financial products and services, and expert assistance to ensure members feel confident in their financial choices.
