International Women’s Day (IWD) started in Europe in 1911, and when the first official IWD was held, it drew over 1 million people throughout Austria, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. It was officially recognized in 1975 by the United Nations General Assembly, who elected March 8th to be the official day of observation.
