While the holidays can be a great time to celebrate and spend time with family, it’s also a time of year when scammers become more active. Here are some common scams, and tips for how to avoid them this holiday season.
Gift Card Scams: To scammers, gift cards are easy to acquire and harder to track down. Be sure that you’re buying and spending gift cards from a reputable store and double-checking that they haven’t been tampered with
Delivery Scams: With online shopping more common than ever, scammers are able to easily trick you by sending texts claiming your package can’t be delivered. These texts will often have a link that take you to a seemingly real website where they try to lure you into providing your personal information.
Social Media Scares: Social media ads are easy for scammers to get information by creating websites that look legitimate, with popular products to “buy.” If you notice anything off about the website, like a lack of ways to contact them, it might be safer to look elsewhere for your presents.
Don’t Panic, Stay Aware: Scammers use holidays to take advantage of the stress you may be feeling and capitalize off it. The most important thing to do is to be aware of the different tactics they use to get your information. Make sure you’re doing so as you shop for the upcoming holidays, and always remember NuMark’s advice to STOP, THINK, and VERIFY!
