Lately, experts have seen an increase in fraud tactics surrounding auto loans, due to the increase in auto purchases happening online. Thanks to the Digital Age, you can buy or sell cars through online marketplaces or companies that deliver the car right to your home without needing to go to a dealership.
While these newer options are certainly convenient, they also give fraudsters more options to scam unsuspecting victims. Some fraudsters will post to online marketplaces for used cars or even go as far as creating fake dealership websites with multiple cars “for sale.” So, how can you identify and protect yourself from these fraudsters?
When it comes to shopping for a car, it’s always important to shop around and do your research. Look at several local dealerships or reliable online posts to see what the typical price range is for the make and model that you’d want. This will give you a good idea of whether the price of the car you’re seeing on a post or website is too good to be true.
If you’re looking at a potential car to buy online, ask the seller to send you newer photos from other angles or if you can inspect it in person. Some websites, even legit ones, only include a few photos of their cars. If the seller is aggressive or avoidant to your request, it could be an indication that they aren’t being honest.
One of the best ways to keep yourself safe from any type of fraud is to trust your gut. Many scammers try to use high-pressure sales tactics (ex. “There’s another person seriously looking at this car, too!”) to push you into making an impulse decision. If the offer seems too good to be true, or something’s telling you the situation feels off, you’re probably right and you’re better off continuing your search elsewhere.
