With the holidays here, it’s not unusual for scammers to be more active than usual, often relying on the busyness and stress people might be feeling. One of the more recent types of scams that has been noticed are email attachment scams.
There’s been an uptick recently with people receiving urgent emails allegedly from the Social Security Administration, with the emails often including an attachment designed to look exactly like an official government letter. These emails will claim that there’s been criminal activity attached to your SSN and that you must call them back immediately to resolve the issue and avoid being criminally prosecuted.
Understandably in a panic, one might call this number without thinking through or looking closer at the email, something that scammers depend on! Then when called, the scammer will ask for personal information and money so that they can “take care” of the issue, when in reality, they’re just stealing from you.
Here are some quick tips to help you identify and avoid falling for these types of schemes:
Always stop and think before taking actions! Real government agencies will not be trying to pressure you into taking immediate action the way scammers do.
If you’re suspicious of concerned about your Social Security account, it’s recommended that you instead visit the official SSA government website.
Never provide personal info to anybody who contacts you out of the blue. The SSA will never ask you for money through phone, text, or email.
NuMark will NEVER call you and ask you to verify confidential information including your social security number, the CVV from your card, or your digital banking password. If a NuMark team member needs confidential information, they will ask you to call us back at our published phone number so that you are confident you are talking to your trusted financial partner!
Fraudsters typically create a sense of urgency. We encourage you to STOP – THINK – VERIFY.
