NuMark Credit Union Extends Gratitude to Volunteers and WJOL for Successful Flags in Day Event
May 2023 – NuMark Credit Union would like to thank those that volunteered during the Flags In Day event held on May 26th at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Together along with other volunteers, NuMark Credit Union staff and board members helped place 70,000 American flags in front of every gravesite and Columbarium wall within the grounds to celebrate fallen veterans for the Memorial Day holiday. It was a truly moving day, and everyone was honored to be able to celebrate these amazing men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country.
“Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is a remarkable local treasure. The Memorial Day tradition was originally known as Decoration Day to honor those who gave all. We must never forget honoring the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Military. I am proud of the NuMark Family for their respect towards all who have served this great nation,” says Wally Chlipala, NuMark Credit Union Board Member and veteran. “Flags in and Wreaths Across America are the least we can do to remember our veterans who have fought and died for our country, and are buried in all Private, and National Cemeteries across these United States. Flags In Day, is an annual event that aims to honor our fallen heroes by placing American flags on the gravesites of veterans in National cemeteries across the country. This tradition goes back to 1948 when the soldiers assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Arlington National Cemetery began the practice to honor the fallen soldiers in preparation for Memorial Day. The event is referred to as “Flags In” because it is when the flags are placed in the ground in front of every gravesite and Columbarium wall within the grounds.
NuMark Credit Union would also like to thank WJOL for their live broadcast coverage the morning of the Flags In Day event. Their commitment to highlighting the importance of honoring our fallen heroes and showcase the efforts of volunteers played a significant role in raising awareness and getting community engagement.
