NuMark Participates in a Special Christmas Gift
-Reflections from board member, Wally Chlipala on the Wreaths across America Project
Thanks to everyone’s generosity, NuMark Credit Union
collected $1,410 and donated 141 wreaths to the “Wreaths across America” Project. NuMark’s board member, Wally Chlipala helped place wreaths at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Saturday,
December 14th. This event
included a Ceremony held
simultaneously at all the United States National
Cemeteries and overseas.
Chlipala, who provided this
picture, shares his thoughts:
“It was great of Mother Nature to provide such an appropriate
seasonal background at this year’s “Wreaths across America” (WAA) event: the beautiful snow-covered grounds and snow falling during the ceremony. I don't know if those who dressed for 40 degree, dry weather appreciated Mother Nature’s loving touch, but my brother (also a veteran) and I, who were ready to handle the conditions, enjoyed the WAA program. This year 6,400 wreaths were placed at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, a 36% increase over last year. Wow!
Thank you to our members who made this a successful event. When Debbie Smothers, WAA Coordinator, thanked all the volunteers and acknowledged the Gold Star families, you could hear the emotion in her voice. That moment in
itself made a profound statement as to why we were all there.
As we waited, standing in these wintery conditions, one wondered about the cold hardships troops endured, especially in the days of wool and leather. Now, we have high-tech cold weather gear to keep us warm. For years I have been able to place wreaths at Abraham
Lincoln Cemetery. This time I returned to take pictures. It is an impressive scene of respect, and something to cherish during the Christmas season.”
Wreaths Across America™. is non profit 501-c3 organization
that was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project.
The Arlington Wreath program was started by Morrill Worcester
in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths
to Arlington National Cemetery.
This annual journey for Mr. Worcester has
expanded across American and beyond. Over 600 locations hold
national wreath laying ceremonies throughout the United States,
Puerto Rico, and 24 overseas cemeteries. This year, Wreaths Across America has a goal of placing 500,000 wreaths on veterans graves nationwide.
The Wreath Across America project is an opportunity for us
to remember those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for
Wreaths Across America reports that through the efforts of over 1650 fundraising groups, corporate donations and general donations, they were able to place 540,000 wreaths at over 900 participating locations in December 2013.
